Almost two years after Tunisia's famous revolts, artist eL Seed returns to his hometown Gabes, for his biggest artistic challenge yet. He has five weeks, during the height of summer in the month of Ramadan, to adorn both sides of Tunisia's tallest minaret on Jara mosque.
Tacapes is the story of a project which almost failed, an artist who never gave up, and a town that inspired the Revolution in countless ways. Tacapes is the Roman name of my city Gabes
Produced by Barjeel Art Foundation
Directed by Walid Kafi, Ouahid Berrehouma and Salah Zribi
Assisted by Mahdi Khmili
"Painting the minaret of Jara Mosque, in my hometown Gabes, was the most challenging project I've ever done, physically, mentally and emotionally. I've thought I was going to give up. Tacapes tells the story of a project which almost failed, a personal struggle, and a town that inspired the Revolution in countless ways.
I can't express how grateful I am to Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi, Mandy Merzaban and Barjeel Art Foundation for supporting me and believing in this project since the beginning. I am grateful to Ouahid Berrehouma, Brian Burgin, Walid Kafi and Mahdi Khmili for making this documentary, when the work conditions were not easy at all.
Also, I want to thank Al Maher and Soudani Jawher for their precious help, the Imam Shaikh Slah, Bolbol Hajaj and all the SIMG team, and all my people in Gabes."
